Don't Wing It with Social Media Content

Josiah HenifinJosiah Henifin

If you're posting on social media whenever you "feel inspired" or have a free moment, you're doing it wrong. Reactive content kills consistency. And inconsistency kills growth.

The Problem with Winging It

I see it all the time: aesthetic practices that post sporadically, with no clear strategy or plan. One week they're posting every day. The next week, nothing. Their content feels random—a before/after here, a product promotion there, maybe a motivational quote thrown in for good measure.

This approach has three major problems:

  1. Inconsistent brand messaging. When you're creating content on the fly, you're not thinking about how each post fits into your overall brand story. Your messaging becomes scattered and confusing.
  2. Low-quality content. Rushed content looks rushed. Your captions are generic. Your visuals are poorly lit or poorly composed. You're not putting in the thought and effort required to create content that actually engages your audience.
  3. Burnout. Constantly scrambling to come up with content is exhausting. You'll burn out, stop posting, and lose momentum.

The Power of Planning Ahead

Here's what changes when you plan your social media content in advance:

Consistency. When you have a content calendar, you post consistently. Your audience knows when to expect new content from you. The algorithm rewards consistency with better reach.

Cohesive messaging. Planning ahead lets you see the big picture. You can ensure your content mix is balanced—educational posts, patient testimonials, behind-the-scenes content, promotional offers—and that your messaging stays on-brand.

Higher quality. When you're not rushing, you can put real thought into your content. You can write better captions, shoot better photos, and create content that actually provides value to your audience.

Less stress. When you batch-create content and schedule it in advance, you free up mental energy. You're not constantly worrying about what to post next. You can focus on running your practice.

How to Plan Your Social Media Content

Here's the process I recommend to every client:

  1. Create a content calendar. Plan out 30 days of content at a time. Decide what you'll post, when you'll post it, and what the goal of each post is. Use a simple spreadsheet or a tool like Later or Planoly.
  2. Batch-create your content. Set aside a few hours once a month to create all your content. Write your captions, shoot your photos, record your videos. Get it all done in one focused session.
  3. Schedule your posts. Use a scheduling tool to queue up your content in advance. This ensures you post consistently, even on days when you're busy or don't feel like it.
  4. Leave room for real-time content. Planning doesn't mean you can't be spontaneous. Leave a few slots open each week for timely content—patient wins, industry news, or trending topics.
  5. Review and adjust. At the end of each month, look at your analytics. What performed well? What didn't? Use that data to refine your strategy for the next month.

The Content Mix That Works

A good content calendar includes a balanced mix of content types:

  • Educational content (40%): Tips, how-tos, myth-busting, treatment explanations. This builds trust and positions you as an expert.
  • Social proof (30%): Before/afters, patient testimonials, reviews. This shows results and builds credibility.
  • Behind-the-scenes (20%): Team spotlights, office tours, day-in-the-life content. This humanizes your brand and builds connection.
  • Promotional (10%): Special offers, new services, limited-time deals. Use sparingly—nobody wants to follow a brand that only sells.

The Bottom Line

Social media isn't something you should wing. It's a critical marketing channel that requires strategy, planning, and consistent effort. When you plan your content in advance, you create better content, build a stronger brand, and grow your engagement.

So stop posting whenever you feel like it. Start planning. Your audience—and your sanity—will thank you.
